Gambas One Announcement

Hello everyone!

(This announcement was originally scheduled for this past April, but things happening behind the scenes dictated holding off until now.)

A few of the Gambas One forum members have been wondering who SiteDir is.

Some of you may have noticed some subtle changes to the forum.

This announcement will reveal what's going on at Gambas One.


How did Gambas One get to where were are now?
Starting around 2010, the original Gambas Forum's (gambasforum.com) creator and administrator was wanting to step away from administering the forum for personal reasons. A fairly new member, sholzy, who didn't want the possibility of the forum to shut down due to the creator not being able to find a replacement, stepped up and took over the duties.

Sholzy ran the forum for another 5-6 years and during that time he moved the forum under his WhiteIslandSoftware.com website to offer more than just a forum to Gambas users. White Island Software offered space for Gambas users a place to upload their projects to share with other members. It was also a place where members could author tips and tricks, tutorials, or just about anything Gambas to help other Gambas users - both newbies and seasoned Gambas programmers alike. Around 2016, due to personal and family issues, sholzy was forced to step away and had to shut down White Island Software without notice, and with much regret.

Two former White Island Software members, cogier and jornmo, teamed up and created the current Gambas One forum to fill the gap left from the closing of the former Gambas forum. Cogier, with jornmo's help, ran the forum for the next 9 years.


What recently happened?
In March (2025), Cogier announced he was wanting to step away from running the forum and website. Sholzy, not wanting to lose a valuable resource that Gambas One has become, once again stepped up and offered to take over the administrative duties of the forum and website. On April 6, 2025, cogier officially transferred ownership of Gambas One (gambas.one) to sholzy. Cogier will retain most of his Admin abilities, but in a more relaxed fashion.

Prior to sholzy making the decision, gbWilly was asked to be an administrator, and he accepted. gbWilly had a large site presence in the White Island Software days as a member creating helpful tutorials and other content under his "How To Gambas", "Showcase", and "GambOS" branches of White Island Software.


What is currently happening?
Current plans include gbWilly offering tutorials, Gambas IDE builds to download, and his current project - GambOS.

Behind the scenes, a move to a different content and forum platform is in the works to help facilitate future plans of becoming more than just a forum. Work is ongoing prepping the new site and working out any problems that are showing up. Unfortunately, progress has been very slow.


What is Gambas One's plan for the future?
Together, gbWilly and sholzy, will help guide Gambas One's future, but they also need you, the Gambas One member's help in creating the future path of Gambas One. Every member has a voice in helping to shape it's path. Your feedback, no matter how critical, is very helpful in making decisions. Your suggestions and opinions are important and very helpful. Your participation in polls is also very helpful.

Gambas One's main goal is to not only increase membership, but also create a reason for all Gambas users and those who might be interested in using Gambas to visit Gambas One's website and forum.

If any members are interested in helping to create content for Gambas One, or wanting to help in any other way, please contact an admin member and let them know how you might be able to help out.


Currently there is no timeline as to when these changes will take place. As more information becomes available, more announcements will be made.


So, who is SiteDir?
SiteDir is not a "who", but a "what".
Members and administrators come and go. Sometimes forums will come and go. To help with having a constant in the Gambas One forum, SiteDir was created to be the Gambas One's administrative team's voice of Gambas One. SiteDir was created to be the one making formal Gambas One posts and announcements by any member of the admin team.
